What are MICRODOTS?
A DataDot Microdot is a tiny polymer disc 1mm or 0.5mm in diameter inscribed with unique information which can be viewed using a special magnifier. 10,000 microdots are fitted to a vehicle in more than 100 locations.
Once mixed in a special adhesive containing a UV trace, microdots are sprayed onto a vehicle or applied onto a bicycle or valuable asset giving it its own DNA. The fitment process for a vehicle takes approximately 20 minutes. All fitted microdots are linked to vehicle details and uploaded to the Department of Transport’s e-Natis system.

2001
DataDot Technology SA founded
DataDot was founded by an entrepreneur with a need to help curb crime in South Africa. Vehicle theft and hijackings were on the increase and the discovery of a tiny microdot with unique identifiers that could give a vehicle its own DNA seemed a sure thing. A small office was opened in George in the Western Cape in 2001 but it would take two years of hard work, sweat and a great deal of persistence and belief in our product - the DataDot Microdot - before our first client - Avis - forged ahead and applied microdots to their fleet of vehicles. Not only did Avis realise a drop in theft, but also an increase in recovery of over 50% in both cases.

SANS 534-1 Published
As of the 1st of September 2012, all new vehicles registered for the first time, as well as all vehicles in need of a Police Clearance, are legally required to be fitted with the Microdot System.
2014
Awarded ISO 14001 Status
We are proud to maintain our ISO 14001 status as the only Microdot Manufacturer and Supplier in South Africa to acquire this. ISO 14001 is an international standard in designing and implementing environmental management systems (EMS). This allows us as DataDot SA to improve on our environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste and therefore provide quality products and services to our Stakeholders.

2020
Over 5 million vehicles fitted with Microdots
In 2020, DataDot reached a milestone of fitting over 5 million vehicles on South African roads.
