Steel Thieves Get Busted

On August 21, 20 steel fencing poles were stolen from the BryanFern Bird Park in Ferndale, but, four days later, a tip-off from an employee at Split Rock Recycling scrapyard stated that two trolley pushers were trying to hand in poles with Micro Asset Tracking DataDot markings on them.

Ian Gunn of Micro Asset Tracking SA and Randburg Saps identified the 25 poles as those stolen in Ferndale. The poles belong to Joburg City Parks and weighed about 150 kilograms. After repeated theft of fencing poles at the BryanFern Bird Park, local resident Ian Ciunn, donated and installed 678 poles marked with Micro Asset Tracking (DataDot), and erected signs on the fence to warn people about the markings.

Cynthia Botha, an employee of Split Rock Recycling, said, "Gunn had warned us to look out for grey steel poles with Micro Asset DataDot markings. "We have our own security and if we suspect someone is trying to sell stolen metal, we restrain them on our premises, with handcuffs if necessary, and alert the police." Randburg SAPS arrested the two suspects and the poles were handed in for evidence at the Randburg police station.
