Microdots To Become Mandatory For New And Imported Vehicles

The SAPS has announced, on the National Vehicle Crime Forum of 2 June 2010, that Microdot's will become compulsory for:

  • all vehicles registered for the first time in South Africa on or after 01 January 2011
  • all vehicles which the South African Police Service (SAPS) allocates a new VIN (SAPVIN) on or after 01 January 2011, and
  • all vehicles imported into South Africa on or after 01 January 2011.

On request of the SAPS, the Minister of Transport will publish regulations in terms of the National Road Traffic Act (Act 93 of 1996) to require the above-mentioned. The microdots will be required to comply with SANS 534-1 (SA's Micro dotting Standard). Mr Fouche Burgers of Business Against Crime South Africa (BACSA) has confirmed that SANS 534-1 is currently been revised in anticipation of the publication of the regulation amendments.
