DOTTING PLEA

SAPS Superintendent Herman van Zyl says he is happy to learn that all Nissan models will in future be protected by microdotting. But he says he wishes Other manufacturers would implement the system, which he sees as an Important tool in the fight against vehicle theft.

He points out that the majority of hi-jacked and stolen vehicles end up with a changed identity (new engine number and VIN) created uSing normal panelbeating skills. But the system of Microdotting, which coats the insides of panels and components with 10 000 tiny dots providing information on the vehicle, ensures that the vehicle, or its components, can always be identified, as it is impossible to eliminate the dots.

"Now if only the Big Two (Toyota and VW) would join in;' he sighs. "Or must we accept that the largest motor manufacturers in the country Consider it the responsibility of the police and government alone to combat crime involving their products?"
